TOP 10 DON’TS OF DECORATING
1.
DON’T create static lines when placing furniture
and accessories. Work to achieve a line
that keeps the eye moving around the room.
A gentle transition between the highs and
lows in a room instead of abrupt changes
in height make a room seem larger.
2.
DON’T paint your walls then look for fabrics
to match. Paint can be mixed in thousands
of colors. It is best to choose the final
shade after furniture, carpeting and drapes
have been chosen.
3.
DON’T hang artwork too high. Art should
relate to the furniture below and around
it. A good rule of thumb is to hang artwork
so that the center of the picture or grouping
is 54” from the floor. When placing artwork
over a piece of furniture, such as a sofa,
hang it no more than 6”to 8” above it.
4.
DON’T line up furniture around the perimeter
of the room. Pulling furniture into attractive
groupings within the room will add warmth
and be more inviting to guests.
5.
DON’T overdo a room with matchy-matchy décor.
Creating a room with matching sets of upholstered
furniture, lamps, and tables is so safe
that it is boring. Use coordinating items
as a backdrop for more personal items that
make the room your own.
6.
DON’T allow clutter to take over. It is
not necessary to display every item you
have ever purchased or received as a gift.
Organize accessories by grouping similar
objects and colors together for more visual
impact. In general, odd numbers of items
will be more pleasing to the eye.
7.
DON’T spread out furniture to fill the space.
The conversation area of a family or living
room should seat 5 to 6 people within a
9’ area.
8.
DON’T forget the area rug. Area rugs add
color and texture. They should relate to
the furniture in the space to ground the
conversation area. Typically an area rug
placed in front of a sofa should be no smaller
than 5’ x 8’.
9.
DON’T crowd the room. Allow a minimum of
24” to 36” for traffic flow in a room. Be
careful about placing furniture where it
will interfere with doorways or cabinet
doors.
10.
DON’T leave out the lighting. In addition
to overhead lighting, it is important to
spread lamps throughout the room to ensure
uniform lighting. Lamps used for task lighting
should be 28” to 32” tall (or 40” to 42”
from the floor.)
