Using Accessories
“Accessorizing is the art of placing and arranging objects
to enrich the style of a room, add personality and most
important, create visual interest,” says HGTV’s Sherry
Ruggieri. Accessories can bring color into a room, fill
empty spaces and camouflage flaws when placed properly.
-
Look
around your home! You may have some treasures tucked
away in the attic or a closet that can be used
decoratively.
-
Mix tall
with short and dark with light for contrast. Combine
materials, such as glass and wood, to make a grouping
visually appealing.
-
Always
display odd numbers of objects together, but don’t
create visual clutter by placing too many items
together. Arrange items close to each other so that
they relate to one another.
-
Allow
greenery to trail over the edge of a shelf or armoire to
soften the hard lines.
-
Cluster
items together by theme – such as wedding photos or
family vacation pictures. They will have much more
impact.
-
Use
hardcover books (with the paper jacket removed) as
pedestals to elevate accessories.
-
Once
everything is in place, make sure it’s interesting from
all angles, as well as from seated and standing
positions. Make a couple adjustments if necessary.
